Small boutique wineries tend to do well if they are linked to a quality restaurant and a well laid out cellar door that can accommodated tourist coaches. The winery also has to be located in a spot which is popular with tourists. Doing a university based course in winemaking and viticulture would also be wise. Viticulture and wine making is both a long term business and a lifestyle choice. There isn't a future in just growing grapes as the big guys have it all stitched up.

My advice would be to work in any industry for at a year or so before diving in.

Back to the basics: - further education and active management of a business niche (one that is not overly sensitive to business cycles ) will generally beat any "hands off" investment strategy during a recession.
