Alphabet Soup Economy

Here’s what happens in our Alphabet Soup Economy:

Plan A doesn’t work…neither does Plan Z.

Last week ended with a whimper and a bang. Stock markets whimpered. Investors didn’t know what to think. And nothing happened last week to help them figure it out.

Stimu-less

Sunday will be the day Germany pays its final reparations for the conflict which began in 1914. Bond holders under the Treaty of Versailles will receive their final payment and it will all be over. A small milestone for the revered austerian herself, Chancellor Angela Merkel, in paying off Germany’s debts.

Day Care or Default?

So far, almost everything that we thought ought to happen is happening. More or less. The crisis. The feds’ reaction. The market’s lack of reaction to the feds’ over reaction. Then, the feds’ reaction to the markets failure to react. One dumb thing begets another.

Thank God for Bailouts

Considering the Labor Government’s record when it comes to government construction programs, we would like to issue the following warning: Do not go bush walking. You may be run over by a tractor laying fibre optic cable for the NBN trials.

Technicalities

What’s your take on technical analysis? The idea that prices can be forecast from charts seems counterintuitive, let alone at odds with the Daily Reckoning philosophy. Well, working alongside Murray Dawes, our trader here in St Kilda, would change your perception rather quickly.

How I generate ‘slipstream’ trades

‘Slipstreaming’ is a cycling metaphor that fits perfectly with what I do in the markets. If you’ve ever watched a big cycle race, like the Tour de France, you’ll know that the key to winning a stage is timing: knowing when to sit in the ‘slipstream’ of the rider in front of you (letting them do the hard work) and knowing which points in the race to attack.

Buffett Commands

Buffett, in his role as aloof spokesman for a bygone era, said, “I am a huge bull on this country…We will not have a double dip recession at all. I see our businesses coming back almost across the board.” All of that is interesting. But only some of it is relevant. Berkshire Hathaway’s shareholders would be more concerned with the actual performance of its units than how Buffett feels about America. But to the extent that Buffett himself has become a brand (cliché)…

Still lucky

The next few days should be telling ones for both gold and equities. Gold has come off its new highs. But you haven’t seen a huge amount of selling either. As our friend Phil Anderson pointed out the other night, you often see two to three days of lower closes after a new high. That gives you a good time to enter into a position. But so far, September hasn’t been the historical disaster we’ve come to expect. Mind you, it’s early. Yet outside some whisperings of capital raisings by major European banks…

Millionaire Factory Misfires

The Aussie market is up 2.77% since the Federal election on August 2nd, if you’re using the ASX/200 as your proxy. This whole “not having a government thing” is working out well for investors. It turns on the uncertainty of having no-one in charge is better than the certainty of having someone in charge. Maybe that will all change this week, though. To begin with, the jobs data from the U.S. gave the market a positive lead. We’re not sure this matters one little bit.

Fed Vows to Maintain Public Financial Health

Extend and pretend…That’s the government’s way of handling the crisis. Extend credit and cash to those who don’t deserve it. Then, pretend that everything is okay…But the problems don’t go away. They just get stretched into the future…What did the feds do for GM? They took over the company.

Oh, ok then

“The Coalition has started to put the heat on the three hold-out rural independents – saying it was ‘inconceivable’ any of them would back a Labor government that had joined the Greens to push a left-leaning agenda.”Oh. So it’s all over.Well, the market enjoyed it.

Time for Bouncy Bouncy

Before we get stuck into today’s financial world, a request: please don’t store petrol in your garage. A reader took us to task for suggesting that last week in our survivalists “to own” list. It was just a list. But her point is well taken. Petrol doesn’t keep well. And you may need it later to burn all your paper money and furniture to keep warm. So store it somewhere safe, if you’re going to store it at all.

Healthy Correction or Ailing Recovery?

You’ll recall that when we left off last week, Ben Bernanke assured the world that while the recovery was not exactly what he had hoped for, he nevertheless had the situation in hand. He said he had the tools necessary to fix the problem and would do whatever was required.

Don’t worry, I’m a central banker!

The Bernanke-led Fed … announced on Aug. 10 it will buy Treasuries to set a $2.05 trillion floor on its balance sheet and keep interest rates from rising. Trichet said Aug. 5 that the euro-area economy was surpassing forecasts, which may pave the way for the ECB to look at phasing out its emergency lending measures.

The Nonsense Recovery

Eventually, investors are going to realize that the discussion of a “recovery” is nonsense. The economy can never recover the pace and frenzy of the bubble years – and so much the better. It has to move on to something new. The big question is: What will this new economy look like?

“Why a mining executive told me to F*** Off
in front of a whole room of investors”
Dr. Alex Cowie doesn’t have the most popular of jobs. At least – not inside the mining industry. For his readers, it’s another matter entirely.

As Laurence says: “I have never bought a stock and got a 100% return before … thanks for providing the information for me to have that experience – and all within two months too!”

Right now Alex has unearthed six “must buy” resource stocks for the year ahead. His method for finding them might annoy a few people in the industry… but it could help make a lot of money in 2012 too.

    Find out why, right here
