Perhaps it’s too early to say. But after the long holiday break and the news that Goldman Sachs somehow eked out US$1.8 billion in earnings in the last quarter, you get the feeling that the Aussie market might enjoy a stroll in the green today.

The Dollar’s Last Days
Last week, a decimal point seemed to move to the left. A UN advisory panel had suggested that maybe it was time to figure it out a better way to run the world’s monetary system. Better, that is, than using the U.S. dollar as the reference currency for the whole world.

Bankers Going Galt
Why aren’t the banks lending locally and what are they doing instead? Well, they’re probably terrified that commodity prices won’t recover any time soon, rendering the collateral posted by mining companies worth a lot less. Or, worried about future losses in commercial property, the banks are saving up for a rainy day.

Finally, Australia gets its own $700 billion plan. Kevin Rudd’s government moved yesterday to slap a Federal guarantee on all deposits with banks, credit unions, and building societies. The $700 billion guarantee includes Australian subsidiaries of foreign owned banks. The government wants people to understand their money is safe in the banks. That’s why that last bit is in there. It’s designed to keep foreign holders of Aussie dollars from engaging in a run on the dollar and bringing their money home.

The share market is not the most important story today. That may be tough for you to believe. After all, the 777 point figure decline on the Dow is the most visible symptom of what’s killing the market. But in terms of percentages, Monday’s 6.9% decline in the U.S. doesn’t even rate as one of the top ten worst one day percentage declines in history. Maybe that will come later this week. Warren Buffett is Buying Four Percent of Goldman Sachs
Is Buffett’s buying a sign that the bottom is in for stocks? After all, didn’t John Templeton plunk down money for every share selling for under a buck on the Dow at the bottom of the bear market that began with the ’29 crash? “Before you rush out to buy Goldman’s stock,” writes my friend Porter Stansberry, “you should consider a few points”. “First, you can’t buy the kind of stock Buffett got on any market, anywhere in the world…”
