If it’s true that markets lead economies, markets are telling us that things are going to get much better. The FTSE index of emerging markets is up 99% from its March lows. The S&P 500 is up nearly 60%. And gold itself is up 25%, with much of that move coming in the last few weeks.

We explained how we had followed the annual bicycle migration out of Paris on Friday night. On the last day of July, Parisians load their bicycles on racks behind their cars and head for the country. We followed the bicycles out of town. The highways were jammed…traffic was start and go for hours.

Hyper-Deflation on the Streets of Paris
Scarcely a block from our office in Paris is a monetary phenomenon that has escaped the financial press. In one of the highest-cost economies in the world, you can buy a woman’s shirt for 2 euros. A dress? Four euros. A man’s jacket can be had for the price of a cup of coffee.
