In America, you’ll find two new exchange traded funds (ETF) linked to commodities. Global X Funds has launched an ETF for tracking sliver miners (NYSE:SIL) and an ETF for tracking global copper miners (NYSE:COPX). From our very cursory, the main rationale for both funds is higher demand for industrial metals, which more or less implies a recovery in the global economy.

BIS Snubs Greek Bonds
Uh oh. Just when you thought it was safe to jump back into Greece again, news comes that Greek borrowing costs have soared above 7% interest. AFP reports that, “Taxi drivers and lawyers have begun strikes against planned budget cuts.” Yet the important news here is that despite the assurances of loans from the EU, market investors are making the Greeks pay to borrow.

If People Feel Good About the Economy then the Economy Must Be Good Itself
Stock markets are fixing to make their highest highs since September of 2008. The Dow nearly closed at a post-Lehman high of 11,000 overnight in New York trading. And here in Australia, the ASX/200 looks to break out of a long channel of indecisiveness and close above 5,000.
Surely those numbers indicate that people feel good about the economy.

Trade Deficit Still High by Historic Standards
On the surface, the week begins with a tale of two economies, each headed in seemingly opposite directions. In Australia, retail sales rose in November by 1.4% to over $20 billion, according to ABS data released last week. It was the strongest monthly rise in eight months. And that was before Christmas shopping really got under way.

Platinum Ready for New Bull Leg

A more accurate word would be “platinum”.Since its initial burst, platinum eased off the accelerator and dropped back down to the stratosphere. It remains on a bullish trend, however.
