What a weekend! Qantas was grounded. Now it’s un-grounded. Airline union strike action is certainly putting workplace laws through their paces. And everyone had something to complain about!
We don’t have much to say about it except that it roughly fits with our theory that the world is contracting.

What we make of it is that dividends used to account for a much larger percentage of your total return in stocks than they have in the last twenty years. Times change. There’s no rule that says the future has to be just like the past. But if stocks beat inflation, should you invest in stocks for income or capital appreciation? That’s the second question.

The “wipeout” in the sector was especially bad news for Babcock & Brown, Rubicon Asset Management, and Record Funds Management. These heavily leveraged firms didn’t survive the steep rise in global borrowing costs. It didn’t help that asset values began tumbling when the leveraged dried up.

What we wonder is why Goldman needed to be made whole at all if its exposure to AIG was hedged? And why did Goldman get paid US$14 billion for its securities when the market value was around $8 billion?

Airline stocks have taken an absolute beating with the high oil price. It is now safe to be a perma-bear on the airlines. To us, this is just when a trade starts to get interesting-when everyone else is on the other side. The trouble with being an airline these days is that it’s a really bad business. You have high capital costs, high energy costs, long-term contracts with unions, and lots of competition. Many airlines will go out of business the longer the oil price stays high. At least there will be less competition.
