“Monetary warfare!” says The Financial Times. In North America, the US is pointing its heavy guns at China… The US Congress has proposed a bill naming China as a “currency manipulator.” How, exactly, is China manipulating the renminbi? It is holding steadfast to the dollar!

Waiting Till the Price is Right
Dow…3 ounces! Our old friend Ronan McMahon has been keeping us up to date. Ireland is going broke, he says. The Irish foolishly borrowed too much money during the boom years. The banks foolishly lent too much money. And then the government foolishly said it would bail them out…

Attachment “G” is Too Dangerous to Be Seen
There may be a simple economic explanation for the best September on Wall Street in 71 years. No double dip recession…improving labour market numbers…rebounding house prices. Except none of that is true. So what is left? Well, as near as we can tell, everyone seems to be front running central banks. Is the Fed buying stocks? Not yet.

Investing in Gold With a Watchful Eye On Mr. Market
What if the final stage of the bull market in gold has already begun? What if investors and speculators begin to panic out of the dollar now? What if they sell the rumor of quantitative easing…rather than wait for the real thing? What if they drive the price of gold up to the moon…

Squishy Ball Test for Banks
It’s an all-out attack on the greenback and everyone else is winning! The Aussie dollar has reached parity with the Canadian dollar (the Loonie) and is fast approaching its previous highs against America’s number one export (the U.S. dollar). So is this a turning point in the currency wars? Well, like all wars, a sensible question to ask is, what are we fighting for?

The Legacy of the Current Recession
Epithet for a doomed economy…What will they say? How will they describe the ’00s and ’10s? Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen was accused of being drunk when he gave a “croaky” radio interview two weeks ago. He denied it. But we’d be tempted to turn to the bottle too…

Attack on 5,000
April seems like such a long time ago. What were investors thinking then? As you can see from the chart below, April was the last time the ASX/200 traded near the 5,000 level. The index is nowhere near the 2008 high (as you can see). But maybe it’s getting ready to make a run to 5,000 by the end of the year.

Which Way for Stocks? Bonds Give a Clue
I’ve spent a lot of time this week sitting around reading odd stuff and mulling over clues. I did find some clues in the bond market that tell us where the stock market may go next. You’ll be surprised at what these clues say. They come from a look back at history.

Long-Term Investing: Gold Versus Stocks
Should you buy gold? Again, it depends on what you’re trying to do. Here at The Daily Reckoning, we don’t encourage speculation. So if you buy gold in the hope of making a lot of money, you’re on your own. We don’t recommend it. Gold could go up…or down.

How to Sift Winning Resource Stocks from the Washouts
If you’re interested in Australian resource stocks, you need to keep an open mind and look outside our borders too. Because we’re so proficient at getting valuable stuff out of the ground, you tend to find talented Aussies wherever the resources are the world over.

Why the Price of Gold Goes Up in a Struggling Economy
Our dear readers who bought gold back in 1999 have made about 4 times their money. This year alone it is up 15% – a very respectable return. Most of that has come as a result of paper currencies going down. Investors are buying gold to protect themselves.

How I generate ‘slipstream’ trades
‘Slipstreaming’ is a cycling metaphor that fits perfectly with what I do in the markets. If you’ve ever watched a big cycle race, like the Tour de France, you’ll know that the key to winning a stage is timing: knowing when to sit in the ‘slipstream’ of the rider in front of you (letting them do the hard work) and knowing which points in the race to attack.

Moral Condemnation for Traders
In the recent copy of Golf Digest, sitting on the coffee table in your editor’s hotel room, we happened on a two page ad for the SPDR Gold Exchange Traded Fund. It’s a pretty add, with lots of gold in it. The headline says, “Gold has a reputation for preserving wealth. Then again, we’re only going back 5,000 years.” There must be a lot of rich golfers out there. Gold made a new high when the December futures contract traded at $1,273.20.

Myths, Human Psychology and Trading
There are many myths about the stock market. No one is exactly sure what the stock market is or how to make money from it consistently. We all have to come to our own understanding of what it is and do the best we can from there.

Rising Debt and the Great Market Waiting Game
In practice, free information turned out to be worth no more than people paid for it…and the dot.com revolution blew up in January 2000…leaving only a handful of survivors (who have done very well, thank you.) In our view, the stock market has been in a bear trend ever since…
