Maybe he will be right. Maybe this downturn will resemble Japan’s multiple recessions over the last two decades. Or maybe it will be a single, deeper and longer lasting slump – like the one in the early ’30s. We don’t know. Either way, it should be thought of as a depression…

A National Mortgage Bubble
This brings us to a quick point about the Aussie property market. A frequent complaint in the e-mail box is that house prices are a local and not national phenomenon. If that’s right, then it doesn’t make any sense to talk about a national property bubble…because there can’t be one, can there!?

If the US Economy is Really Following Japan Things Will Get a Lot Worse
Internally, the Japanese are still not big spenders. The population is not only aging…it’s shrinking. That’s not happening in the United States. Thanks largely to its immigrants and Hispanics, the US population is expanding. But this new population is not the same as the old one.

China Stepping Up Purchases of U.S. Treasury Debt
Is the rally still on? We’re not sure. Yesterday, the Dow fell 83 points…after a weak bounce on Tuesday. We expected the rally to last until June and to take the Dow back to the 10,000 range. But anything could happen.
